If you’ve ever thought about becoming a social worker but don’t have the qualifications (or didn’t quite get the results you hoped for), you might be surprised to know it’s still possible to start your career in social care.
While certain roles in social work require formal degrees and training, you don’t always need to start there. At Prospero Health & Social Care, we help people step into the industry – even if you’re fresh out of school.
Many people begin in support or care positions, gaining valuable hands-on experience before going on to complete formal social worker qualifications later.
Becoming a social worker in the UK without a degree:
You might not be able to jump straight into a fully qualified social worker role, but there are plenty of entry-level positions where you can start today:
Support Worker
Care Assistant
Youth Support Worker
Residential Care Worker
Mental Health Support Worker
If you are not ready to start in an entry-level job, or you need experience. There are many ways to do this. The more experience you have, the more competitive you’ll be when applying for roles.
Volunteering: Get involved with local charities, community centres, or care homes.
Work placements: Short-term roles can help you understand day-to-day responsibilities.
Shadowing: Spend time observing experienced care workers to learn how they support individuals.
Entry-level jobs (listed above): Start in positions such as Care Assistant or Support Worker to gain first-hand knowledge.
Not happy with your results? You’re not alone. At Prospero Health & Social Care, we believe your passion, commitment, and willingness to learn are far more important than a set of grades.
We specialise in matching people – including those with no qualifications – to roles where they can grow and thrive. Our approach focuses on:
Tailored training to give you the skills you need
Flexible job opportunities across the UK
Career planning to help you work towards formal qualifications over time
If you’re ready to start your journey in social care, don’t let a lack of qualifications hold you back. Many of our candidates have gone from entry-level positions to fully qualified social workers – and it all began with taking that first step.
